How to get there from Bogotá and Medellín

From Bogotá or Medellín, the trip to Isla Múcura has three legs: a flight to the coast, a short ground transfer and the boat to the island. The key is choosing the right arrival city, because it determines which boat you’ll take.

Via Cartagena

This is the most common route from Bogotá and Medellín, because Cartagena has more daily flights. The flight takes about an hour and a half from Bogotá and a little over an hour from Medellín.

Since the boat leaves at 9:00 a.m. and you need to be at the pier by 8:00 a.m., most travelers fly the day before and spend a night in the city. Pier and luggage details are in our guide to getting there from Cartagena.

Via Tolú

There are flights from Bogotá and Medellín to Montería, and some airlines also fly to Corozal, in Sucre, closer to Tolú. From the airport you continue by road to Tolú.

With a very early flight you can make the midday boat the same day, but the margin is tight: you need to be at the Múcura Express office by 11:30 a.m. The more relaxed option is to spend the night before in Tolú. Full details are in our guide to getting there from Tolú.

Sample trip from Bogotá

DayPlan
Day 1Afternoon flight from Bogotá to Cartagena and a night in the city
Day 2Pier at 8:00 a.m., boat at 9:00 a.m. and an afternoon at the beach on the island
Days 3 and 4Isla Múcura: snorkeling, kayaking, sunsets and rest
Day 5Check-out, return boat at 11:30 a.m. and an afternoon or evening flight to Bogotá

When booking your flight home, leave plenty of margin after the boat reaches Cartagena: sea conditions can delay the crossing.
